Hostas & Geraniums
PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
April 2002
Margaret Owens
Quincy, MA
Margaret writes: "Our yard is small and has a lot of shade.  We love Gardening with perennials the best, and have learned to work with varieties that suit our conditions.  Hostas are a great choice for small areas (they're not aggressive spreaders), and they make wonderful subjects in pictures with their color variations, veining, and layering effects.  Some of our favorite pictures have them as the backdrop, with colorful cupid's dart or lavender in the foreground.  This picture features a pretty pink wood geranium."

PHOTO CONTEST WINNER
March 2002
Janice Minter
Corpus Christi, Texas
Janice writes: "This is one of my favorite photos of my Dad at his watergarden.  He built it around an old spring fed creek bed at his ranch in central Texas.  It encompasses about an acre in area and is surrounded by huge 200 and 300 year old Spanish Oak trees which he still climbs around in and prunes at 75 years old.  The old watergarden has been a labor of love and and is one of the reasons he stays so healthy.  I visit as often as possible and love working in the garden with him.  One of the things I enjoy most about this photo is the way the oak limb arches over and frames Dad examining a small plant at the watergarden."
