Container Planting and Patio
Gardens
The pending question: How do you bring the garden to
the gardener? The answer: Simple.....plant in
containers! This is a handy solution for those people who
live in apartments and for those who have problems working the
soil at ground level. Pots and containers on tables or
benches offer a new dimension to the gardening enthusiast
allowing them to bask in their efforts at close range.
|

|
|
When using containers, choose one that is large enough.
Plants need room to grow and it is better to have one too large
than too small. Also, keep in mind how tall the plant is
going to be...rule of thumb - the container should be the width
of about half the height.
Make sure that the container you choose also has a hole or
holes in the bottom to ensure proper drainage of excess
water from the pot. If it has a large hole, cover it with
some pieces of broken pots or gravel to keep the soil in.
Plant bulbs about half as close as you would out in the
garden...this makes for a fuller look since you are closer to
it. Need a suggestion on what to plant...browse
our collections of bulbs suitable for planting in
containers!
Container gardening does require a bit more work...you will
need to:
|
|
- Water more frequently since they do dry out quicker
- More frequent applications of fertilizer since part will
leak out of the pot
- More grooming and deadheading since you are closer to the
flowers...keep them neat and tidy and pinch out growing tips
which will also promote branching out.
|
|
|
With clay pots, you will need to water more frequently as well
than with plastic pots. However, clay pots are more
attractive than plastic ones.
If the top of the soil in your pot turns white, you have a
build up of salt in your soil. You will need to flush the
salt (which was in your fertilizer) out of the dirt by watering
it thoroughly and letting the water drain out of the pot.
Also, when creating window boxes, make sure they look
attractive from the outside as well as from the inside.
Use height sparingly and concentrate mainly on hanging type
plants. Here again, presentation is the key and,
therefore, maintenance is important.
Besides plants and bulbs, you can also grow herbs and
vegetables in containers. Don't be afraid to plant several
different herbs in the same pot...fresh herbs will bring a
different dimension to your cooking!
