Guidelines for Planting and Preparing Your Gardens This Spring
Below is a MID SPRING checklist for planning your flower garden and landscape in general...keep in mind that 'Mid Spring' is relative to the area in which you live which can range from mid April in the South to late May in the North.

Things To Do in Mid Spring:

  • Plant and divide waterplants.  Now is a great time to plant waterlilies.  Since they are somewhat expensive, it is worth taking good care of them by following the instructions to successfully plant them without disturbing the pond.  Make sure to choose waterlilies according to the size of the pond in which they will be planted.
  • Plant herbaceous plants which can most likely be planted in the garden at any time.  If you buy these from a mail order company, they will most likely arrive as root-wrapped plants that need planting before too much growth has emerged.  Be sure to keep these plants well-watered for a while until they are established.
  • Sow hardy annuals.  These are the easiest to care for as they are not demanding.  Planted in a sunny location will almost always give the best results.  Take care to water well when it stays dry for long periods of time until the seedlings have emerged.
  • Feed and mulch beds and borders.
  • Plant a hedge if needed to provide privacy or protection from wind.
  • Plant summer bulbs taking care to follow instructions carefully regarding spacing, planting depth and location.
  • Sow a new lawn or lay sod.  Sowing a new lawn is less expensive than laying sod; however, in both cases, a thorough soil preparation is a must and should be started several weeks in advance.  If time is short in the Spring, wait until Fall to tackle this project but be sure to water well at either time.
  • Buy the last bulbs and seeds that you need to finish your Spring planting for summer flowering.
  • Plant a hanging basket or color bowl container for your deck or patio.  You'll enjoy these all Summer long...be sure to keep well-watered and protect them from heavy rains and winds.
